I’m surprised I lasted with her as long as I did. As soon as she told me she loved me, I blew like…a rocket, I guess.

Laying here now, surrounded by the sound of crickets and the odd puff of wind in the trees, I’m smiling again, thinking about her “pocket rocket” comment and how much fun she is.

I wonder if women really understand how much a man can love them…maybe not, because men are so trained not to express it.

Trained not to show vulnerability.

But, damn, do we feel it.

After that excellent fuck, we went skinny-dipping again, this time actually swimming, and once dried off, we dressed in the light clothes she brought for us to sleep in and just cuddled, her body pressed against mine and her head on my chest.

“Jack?” Her sleepy voice, already so familiar to me.

“Yes?”

“After this gig is over and I get my money? I don’t think I want to move back to Toronto anymore.”

“No?” I hug her closer and smile into her hair.

I knew this was coming. I felt it the minute I laid eyes on her.

Destiny.

I found the one. Or, she found me.

Either way, this was meant to be.

“No. Not unless you come with me, anyway.”

“Neither one of us is moving to Toronto, babe. You’re staying here, with me. Next break, I’ll take you to my house on the lake. Our house. You can do what you like with it, get nest-y, make it yours. How’s that sound?”

“Like a dream come true,” she says. But her tone is hesitant.

“But…?”

“But, my brother. He won’t go back to Claude’s house either. That was my whole reason for taking this job, remember? To get a place for me and Mikey, and to have a bit of cushion-money saved.”

“You won’t have to worry about that anymore. Your brother will live with us. But, tell me honestly. Is Claude really so hard to live with?”

“Yes!” She sits up and looks at me so I know how serious she is. “I told you, he’s two-faced. He talks to me and my brother like shit, but never in front of my mom. He’s an ass. A controlling ass. Even his house is controlling. He has one of those so-called Smart Houses, you know the ones?”

“Everything’s computer controlled?”

“Yes. I call it a Snitch House. You use a keypad with a unique code to get into the house, and to lock it up, right? The system logs it so he knows when you come in and when you leave. Spy cams everywhere, supposedly for security reasons.”

“Everywhere? Not in the bedrooms, too?”

Her eyes widen and she chews her lip. “Hell, I hope not. I hope he’s not a creep and a perv along with everything else.
